UNDERSTANDING SMOKE DAMAGE
TEMPERATURE
Because hot air rises, smoke damage is most commonly found directly above where the fire blazed. The highest concentration of smoke residue is usually on the ceiling above the fire if no strong air currents are present. Cold air sinks, creating a path for smoke to travel to exterior windows and walls. Even if the fire is in the center of the room, lots of smoke residue can be found on outside walls.
